07 Oct Gallagher Amendment Repeal Public Forum
The LoDo District, Inc. invites LoDo businesses and residents to a virtual forum on Ballot Initiative B: Repeal of the Gallagher Amendment. The forum, which is free of charge, will be held on Wednesday, October 7 from 5-7 p.m. Consider it a BYOB “happy hour”, and feel free to enjoy a beverage while learning more about the pros and cons of repealing this amendment to the State Constitution.
For those of you who are not acquainted with the Gallagher Amendment, here is a quick summary:
The Gallagher Amendment, passed in 1982, intended to prevent an undue property tax burden on owners of residential real estate which, at the time was increasing in value at a greater rate than commercial values. It amended the State Constitution and requires that residential property not account for more than 45% of the revenue generated by property tax in the entire state. Times change, and during the subsequent 18 years, the amendment has had a number of consequences both positive and negative, intended and unintended.
Please join our speakers, State Senator Chris Hansen and Former State Senator, Boulder County Commissioner, and Co-Author of the Gallagher Amendment, Ron Stewart, to learn about the pros and cons of repeal, have an opportunity to pose questions, and get the information you need to make an informed decision when you vote.
We promise this will not be a dry, economic analysis and will shed light on issues relevant to the LoDo community. We hope you will join us!
