Restaurants and Volunteers Support Barth Hotel with 29th Annual Holiday Dinner

Local restaurants and volunteer LoDo residents once again generously supported LoDo Cares and the Barth Hotel as part of our annual LoDo Cares Holiday Dinner. This was the 29th year for the festive occasion at the Barth for the 62, low-income and disabled seniors who call the beautiful historic building at 17th and Blake Street their home.

Of course, this has been a difficult year and the donations from our local restaurants are even more meaningful during time of Covid and staffing issues. We were thrilled to have 11 restaurants participate this year. Our menu came together with help from many of our usual supporters, along with several new additions. The result was a traditional and diverse dining menu. Barth residents ordered savory main dish items including Sliced Turkey by Citizen Rail, Baked Hams by The Thirsty Lion, and Christmas Chicken Enchiladas by Kachina. Side dishes included Mashed Potatoes and Gravy by Urban Farmer, Mac ‘n Cheese by The Original, Savory Sweet Potatoes by Beckon, Corn Bread and Sea Island Peas by Jax, Brussel Sprouts and Fried Rice by ChoLon, and Cranberry Sauce donated by Jim Theye and Dee Chirafisi. The meal was accompanied by dinner rolls from Mercantile and City Bakery. Our scrumptious deserts this year included Pumpkin and Fruit Pies by City Bakery, Apple Pies by The Pig and The Sprout, and Mexican Wedding Cookies by Kachina. Jim and Dee donated $100 to participating restaurants as tips for the kitchen staff. Other residents also donated to the staff of some of the participating restaurants.

Once again, this year we created a menu which ensured that everyone got to pick their favorites. Volunteers from LoDo Cares picked up the meal items from the restaurants and stayed to help the Barth kitchen staff serve the delicious fare. Volunteers this year included Jerry, Jamie and Leland Orten, John Wetenkamp, Tim Jordan, Ann Jamison, Jim Goddard, Christine Loomis and Laura and Jason Schlossman. Several of these volunteers were a huge help reaching out to the restaurants once again this year.

LoDo Cares would like to mention our special appreciation for the restaurants who make this event possible. Two of those restaurants have donated menu items for our LoDo Cares Holiday Dinner at the Barth Hotel since 2003, and we are thrilled that Jax and City Bakery have supported this event annually for nearly two decades. Another long-time supporter ChoLon has been with us since 2012, and Kachina has become one of our biggest supporters, along with new sister restaurants The Original and Urban Farmer. New to our event this year were Thirsty Lion and Beckon. Thank you!

We sincerely appreciate the support of these participating restaurants and encourage you to visit and dine with them often. These chefs and kitchen staff do a great job, and the food shows up hot, delicious, and right on time. The Barth residents appreciate that these restaurants put a lot of care into the dishes they create, and the proof is in the taste! It really makes the residents feel like part of the community– which, of course, they are!

LoDo Cares is a collaboration between the LoDo District, Inc., and the Lower Downtown Neighborhood Association (LoDoNA). The Barth Hotel is operated by Senior Housing Options.
