Hearing Officer Recommends New Bar

August 23rd, 2009

Hearing Officer Abel Alvarado on August 13 issued a recommended decision granting the application of the owner of The Front Porch to operate a new bar at 1437 Market St.  The parties in interest opposing the application, LoDoNA members Valerie and Dale Chandler and Jim McCotter, and the Larimer Square Association, have until August 24 to file objections.  The final decision from the Department of Excise and Licenses will then be issued by Penny May, the new Director. McCotter said that he intends to argue that LoDo is an at risk area that could be adversely impacted by a new bar, that the evidence clearly shows that the existing bars in the specific area and LoDo adequately meet the reasonable requirements of the neighborhood for alcohol service and that therefore the application should be denied.

LoDoNA Challenges New Tavern License Application

August 5th, 2009

In July, Greg Gallagher, owner of The Front Porch, located at 15th and Lawrence, applied with Denver’s Department of Excise and Licenses for a new Tavern License for 1437 Market St., a space formerly occupied by Hair Strand.  Following a meeting between Gallagher and members of the Good Neighbor Committee, the LoDoNA Board voted to oppose the application on the ground that the neighborhood, which already has many taverns and other liquor outlets which are essentially bars, does not need another one, particularly in an economic environment which has seen several establishments close.   A hearing was held on August 3, at which both the applicant and neighborhood protestants, including residents and Larimer Square Associates, presented evidence.  LoDoNA Board member and Good Neighbor Committee Co-chair David Cole testified concerning LoDoNA’s position.  At the conclusion of the hearing, the matter was taken under advisement by the hearing officer, who said he planned to issue a decison within 7-10 days.  This was the first liquor application that LoDoNA has protested in more than 2 years.  For further information, contact David Cole at djc730@aol.com.
