Approximately fifty women who live and work in LoDo attended the first event of the 2009 LoDoNA Women’s Series Wednesday, March 18, at the art-filled home of Betty Arca.
The mission statement was reiterated…
“There is a vibe to LoDo. An energy that is rich and full. Our community is made up of extraordinary people. We are mothers, philanthropists, friends artists, professionals, CEOs, social workers, yoga instructors, and owners of unique businesses. The LoDoNA Women’s Series brought us together to celebrate our uniqueness. As we enter our second year, we will deepen our connections and enrich our conversations. We will celebrate and generate meaningful connections for women who live and work in the LoDo community”.
Entitled “Continuing the Conversation”, the evening began as Experience Designer Ayn Fox asked the women to form a large circle and use three different words to describe topics that they like to talk about. Travel, running, fitness, LoDo, politics, grandchildren, fashion, art, books, yoga, and golf were just some of the words expressed.
Later, there were three rounds of conversation lasting approximately 20 minutes. The women broke into groups using the following categories: birthday month, birth order, and geographic location (where she was born or grew up). The topics discussed were hidden secrets of LoDo & beyond, life lessons, and creating or building on “something” in LoDo.
Some secrets shared were Savory Spice Shop and Wen Chocolates on Platte Street, Common Grounds moving to former Sugar Beat space, Root Down organic restaurant in the Highlands, and the Patty Cramer painting on bricks in the alley on the west side behind 1738 or 1792 Wynkoop Street.
A few of the creative ideas were bringing a parking district to LoDo, starting a restaurant in which homeless people are hired, assisted and given a skill, imploring The Tattered Cover to bring its “Active Minds” program to LoDo on a regular basis, establishing a resource directory for LoDo, i.e, retail businesses, at-home businesses, etc., and opening a market with flower, food, greeting card and miscellaneous small stalls.
The next Women’s Series event will be Wednesday, June 17, at 5:30 PM at the party room at Larimer Place. “Visual, Edible and Wearable Creativity” is the title and all LoDo photographers, artists, cupcake bakers, purse makers, doll makers, jewelry designers, and clothing designers and representatives are encouraged to contact Joyce Lozow at joyloz@aol.com if they would like to participate.
