An Interesting Week

August 30th, 2008

5 Degrees–Francois Safieddine, the owner of this club, asked us to allow him to have a band on the patio for a DNC-related event this past Monday.  We agreed, provided that the band stop playing at midnight. The promoter was aware of the deal, but when midnight came he tried to browbeat Francois into letting the band play, going so far as to offer to pay the $1,000 which doing so might have cost Francois (to say nothing of relations with us).  Francois held firm in what was observed to be a very heated exchange with the promoter. Good for him.

A real alley bar–On Tuesday, a group blocked off about a third of the Alley between Blake and Wazee Streets and 15th and 16th, laid down some astroturf and set up to play for and provide refreshments to the Alabama Delegation.  Maybe OK liquor wise (a private party) but blocking the alley without notice or the OK from Public Works?  Probably not the only case of rules being overwhelmed  in connection with the Dems.
Le Rouge to Lavish–You are probably familiar with Le Rouge, the place at 1448 Market Street that was supposed to operate like a restaurant but even its owners conceded was more like a club.  Despite our real disappointment on this score, Le Rouge’s operations never seemed to cause any troubles.  It opened in March 2006, but slightly over a year later was closed amid charges and counter charges between the partners which are to be arbitrated soon.  In the meantime, the 2 remaining owners of Le Rouge sought to transfer its licenses to Lavish Restaurant and Lounge, which they also own.  This raised questions about the status of our rights following any transfer under a 2005 Agreement we had negotiated with Le Rouge.  We talked to the owners, and they signed an agreement whereby the rights and obligations of the parties under the 2005 Agreement continue in effect as to Lavish, the new entity.  Now we are waiting to find out specifically what they have in mind for the space.

Thursday, Aug. 28 — Day Four

So, that’s it. The streamers are down, the fireworks done, the crowd walking home. The Democratic National Convention is over. Denver’s biggest party in years — maybe ever — concluded with a wealth of positive impressions and virtually nary an incident of shame. An historic Presidential candidate launched with fanfare and cheers. I hope every LoDo resident enjoyed the show. We never looked better, nor did we ever make so many visitors feel so welcome so many different ways.

Thanks and congratulations to all who helped make it all work so well.

I’m ready for a long night’s sleep. G’night!

A dailt post by long-time LoDoNA Board Member Jerry Arca

Wed., Aug. 27 – Day Three — The street remains jammed with every imaginable sight and sound. My favorite sighting to date…a giant white toilet bowl running down the street. I couldn’t read the signs the guys running with him/her/it were carrying, so I still don’t know what that was about. My favorite sign: “Stop Bird Porn”…you figure that one out. My favorite T-shirt…”Black Man Running and It Ain’t From the Police.” My favorite exchange with a visitor: She: “Where’s everybody going?” Me: “To the Pepsi Center.” She, with a straight face, “What going on at the Pepsi Center?”

The city continues to shine. The weather has been perfect. One more day and we can all relax.

Memories in the making

August 26th, 2008

Well, it sure is fun and different–a gathering of, for instance, firefighters, it is not.  People keep comparing the Mall to the streets of New York, emphasizing, I assume, the positive.  Although I’m sure they’re tested at (many) times, the police–from everywhere, it seems–appear to be keeping decent order and allowing folks to exercise their rights in appropriate fashion.  So far, so good. A daily report on the DNC from long-time LoDoNA board member Jerry Arca

Mon., Aug. 25 — Day One is here and in the books. Celebrity sightings are on our minds around downtown. Joe Biden in Writer’s Square eating barbecue. Al Sharpton browsing a merchandise tent on the Mall. Jesse Jackson Jr. strolling to dinner on Wazee. Rumors of Ben Affleck and Brangolina eating nearby (not together!). The energy and buzz is big-time and the chance to be right in the middle of it all feels like a privilege. One question our downtown hosts get over and over: “Where is Tom Brokaw?” Wish we knew. Can Denver continue to pull this off with class? Wish we knew that one, too! Stay tuned!

A daily report on the DNC by long-time resident and LoDoNA Board Member Jerry Arca.

Sunday, Aug. 24 – One Day To Go.

Here we are on the threshold of Denver’s biggest party in years and the energy is contagious. I rode the shuttle with a man from Littleton who simply said to me, “I think a whole lot of people are going to fall in love with Denver this week.” He may be right. The city is as beautiful as ever. The weather this weekend has been perfect. The crowds are big and growing, but in good spirits. Even the first major protest march, which wound its way up the Mall (on the sidewalks to keep it legal) from Union Station, went off without a hitch. The marchers were accompanied by hundreds of police on bicycles, horses, motorcycles, vans and riot trucks, but everyone respected each other and democracy lived for another day.

We get down to business tomorrow. We’ve got a Presidential candidate to nominate.

A daily report by long-time LoDoNA board member Jerry Arca on the Democratic National Convention.

Saturday, Aug. 23 — Two days to go.

The start of the convention may be two days away, but the party has arrived. Today downtown was a good preview of the days to come, with people from all over the world roaming the streets. I decided the 16th Street Mall has to be the safest place in all of America right now. The police presence was massive, possibly communicating to all that “we are here, don’t try anything stupid.” It worked for me, hopefully for all. Our volunteer hosts handled every kind of question, from, “Where’s the nearest Catholic church,” to, “I know the secret service has a headquarters here somewhere, can you tell me exactly where it is?” I mean, come on now, if we all knew that one, they wouldn’t exactly be the secret service, would they?

The night ended with a massive fireworks show over Elitch Gardens, site of the big media party. Let’s all hope those are the last of the fireworks we see on our city streets until this show leaves town.

Friday, Aug. 22 — Three days to go. Today was my one and only chance to visit the Pepsi Center and marvel at the spectacular setting for the DNC. LoDoNA President Jim McCotter made the tour with me and it was hard for us to imagine the cost and time it took to make the total transformation. Colorado’s delegates will have excellent seats, right next to those from Illinois. Rhode Island, on the other, might need some extra oxygen for their seats. But that’s how it goes. Looking up at the luxury boxes, now turned into TV network sets, we saw the one bearing the Al Jazeera logo. Now that’s a first.

After leaving the arena, we made a quick stop in the protest area — the Cage — which felt quite strange. Our Councilperson Judy Montero told me Thursday night that the police have worked hard on “de-escalation” of problems. We hope they get it right! Finally, Jim and I slipped into and through of one of the giant media tents in the parking lots. Everybody will be here…but most of them aren’t even close to being ready for action. Guess they’re still in Beijing.

But we’ll be ready Saturday morning with our volunteer team of Downtown Hosts. Maybe we’ll see some of you out there. Hope so!

Thursday, Aug. 21 — Four days to go and the activity is humming all over downtown. What’s it going to be like? No one knows for sure, so it was fun to ask 14 people at random earlier tonight at the Weebot for their one-word prediction of what the week would be like. Their answers were encouraging: fantastic, fabulous, great, interesting, great (again), excited, historic, unpredictable, fabulous (again), fun, exciting and pure joy. Only two were less optimistic. Their answers: bad and hell! We’ll know soon, won’t we? Other strange sights tonight: the two-story tent being built on Wynkoop between 14th and 15th. Never seen such an animal. Oh year, and the beautiful blonde in a bright red sequin evening gown posing for a photo shoot in the middle of the mall at 9:30 at night. And this is Denver?

A Daily post on the DNC from long-time resident and LoDoNA Board Member Jerry Arca

Thursday, Aug. 21:

Four days to go before the gavel comes down to open the 2008 Democratic National Convention. As I walk around downtown, I’m struck by how great the city looks…the recent rain surely helped, but so many construction projects and spruce-up jobs are done. I notice the old Fontius Building…now the Sage Hospitality Building. A fabulous refurbishment of the facade, and now covered with red, white and blue bunting and American flags. New planters along California from the Mall to the Convention Center. New street performers everywhere. Have you seen the guy playing glass harp near Rock Bottom Brewery? Take 50 or 60 cognac glasses, fill them with water, rub a wet finger over the rims…and you’ve got a glass harp. He plays everything from Star Wars to Bach, with harmony, too. Pretty amazing.

We ready with 400 volunteers — many from LoDo — who will take to the streets beginning Saturday morning sporting yellow shirts and hats to make sure our 50,000 visitors find their way around easily and discover just how friendly and hospitable Denverites can be. I’ll be part of that effort and expect to see and experience some interesting and strange sights during the week. I’ll keep you posted on what’s out there!

Stay tuned.
