The LoDo Cares Holiday Project – Volunteers Needed

For the first time this year, the LoDoNA Holiday Project is now The LoDo Cares Holiday Project, a collaboration between the Lower Downtown Neighborhood Association and LoDo District, Inc. Residents and businesses in Lower Downtown and the Central Platte Valley will work together as in the past eleven years to share, bring a little cheer and assistance to our less fortunate neighbors.

Boxes for residents and business donations of non-perishable foods will be dropped off Thursday, December 2nd and and pickup Friday, December 10th. Some of the items needed are: canned tuna, canned fruits & vegetables, ramen noodles, and peanut butter. We are looking for a chairperson and other volunteers are needed.

Streetwatch: Planet of the Apes!

Over a thousand gorillas will take up Wynkoop Street Saturday from about 11 to 12 noon. It’s the annual Denver Gorilla Run, benefitting the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. Starts and ends at the Wynkoop Brewery, or, if you are not sure, under the giant inflated gorilla. Enjoy!

Coming Soon to a Street Near You

Avs game Saturday night, expect the usual traffic. Then, on Sunday morning, a few hundred people (not gorillas) will be at Elitch’s and on the river paths near REI in the “Melting Pot Halloween Hustle 5K and Spooky 1 Mile Family Run.” Did you know that there are 145 Melting Pot Restaurants in the country? Be careful crossing the streets.

Good Neighbor Updates

October 27th, 2010

As we make the transition from summer to winter, the Good Neighbor Committee wanted to pass on some recent developments.  First, we successfully negotiated Good Neighbor Agreements with several establishments, including FreshCraft, 1530 Blake St.; Organixx, 1520 Blake St.;  Cholon Bistro, 1555 Blake St.;  and Blokes (a barbershop), 15th and Wewatta Sts. In addition, we entered into a GNA with an existing bar/club, Oak Tavern, in exchange for our agreement not to oppose its application for a roof top patio.  The GNA has many strong provisions, there are no nearby residents and out past dealings with the owner have been very positive.

Not everything went so well.  Smashburger, between Larimer and Lawrence on the Mall, declined to go along with our demand that they not have outdoor speakers.  Since we determined that alcohol is not a significant part of their operations—it’s kind of like Chipotle and Noodles—we declined to discuss a GNA further.  Also, in the context of transfers, where our input and leverage are quite limited, we tend to meet a lot of passive resistance, which has so far been the case with Big Game, 1546 Wazee, St. and Hayter’s Sports Bar, 1920 Blake St.  Hope nevertheless does spring somewhat eternal.

A previous report talked about Sports Page, 1434 Blake St., vacating the premises to the delight of the neighboring Chandlers.  The reprieve was only temporary, however, as Pre-Game shortly appeared on the scene and opened with a bang, which led to noise complaints and visits from the police.  Then the bloom faded and Pre-Game copied Sports Page’s exit strategy of leaving owing lots of rent, just a few days before the hearing on a proposed modification which had been opposed by the Chandlers and LoDoNA.  No one else yet, but hard to believe there won’t be, and in fact we were able to get a GNA with Russell Green, which is taking over Below’s license in Larimer Square.”.

One thing we all noticed this summer was the increase in noise due to more and more open doors and windows.  The good news was that for the most part this took place in areas with few if any residents, but there were a couple exceptions—the bars owned by Paul Piciocchi on 15th St. between Market and Larimer (near Larimer Place) and Mellow Mushroom on the Mall across from Writers Square.  Thanks to work by the Committee and persistence by the affected neighbors, there seems to be progress in dealing with the situation, although it is never as fast as we would like.  All the more reason to be glad that the weather is turning cooler.

The main change on the street was the retirement of Commander Deb Dilley , who served us so well for many years.  Her successor, Commander Tony Lopez, is very energetic and intent on bringing the same level of service to District 6.  He and his folks are looking at ways to deal with some of our nagging problems like let-out time late Fridays and Saturdays and people making sidewalks nearly impassable to pedestrians—who do have a right to be there.  Commander Lopez is going to be meeting with the GNC at its meeting November 2 at 4:00 pm in the Community Room of Northern Trust, 1400 16th St.  Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend.

The Good Neighbor Committee’s charge is to try to make sure that this area we call home, which undeniably offers vibrant and diverse entertainment opportunities, remains safe and secure.  We welcome your feed back on how we’re doing.  Contact Jim McCotter, 303.883.9542; jmccotter42@gamil.com, or any of the other GNC members listed on the website.

Street Watch: Just a Few Thousand Zombies on the Mall this Weekend

October 22nd, 2010

(Street Watch information is provided by the City and County of Denver, carefully culled and digested by Denver by the Slice and posted here for LoDoNA by David Huntress. See Denver by the Slice, the website about living in Downtown Denver, for more news and views)

Only the on-going construction of Larimer and the always unpredictable corner or sidewalk project for this weekend. Avs game Saturday and Broncos game Sunday will bring the usual bad drivers to the neighborhood, so be careful crossing the streets.

And, be careful moving around the Mall on Saturday afternoon about 4-6 as the annual Zombie Crawl moves from Skyline Park down to Glenarm Street and back. Later on, they’ll walk off into the night.

Street Watch: Wake-up Call This Sunday!

October 15th, 2010

26.2 Miles and 30 Bands. This is the Denver Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. And, it starts early on Sunday the 17th. Early enough that you may be surprised to hear people, bands and, yes, cheerleaders outside your window…before you really want to! Streets affected Downtown include parts of 15th, Wynkoop, 17th, Blake, 21st, Larimer, 18th, Arapahoe, 19th and Broadway. The bad news is that they will be closed where affected at 6 in the morning. The good news is that everyone should clear into other parts of the city and streets will be re-opened by 9 in the morning. And, then, there are the cheerleaders outside your window. Yikes. And, it looks as though a Honky Tonk band will be dialing it up at about 17th and Blake, the nearly 2 mile mark. Enjoy. You can click here for full information on this event.

The kids’ version of the event takes up Bannock Street between Colfax and 10th most of Saturday morning. Oh, and the Broncos play the Jets on Sunday afternoon which might make you wish the cheerleaders were still outside your window. Be careful crossing the streets!

Street Watch: Columbus Day Parade Saturday

October 8th, 2010

(Street Watch information is provided by the City and County of Denver, carefully culled and digested by Denver by the Slice and posted here for LoDoNA by David Huntress. See Denver by the Slice, the website about living in Downtown Denver, for more news and views)

Traffic should move fairly normally throughout the neighborhood this weekend, other than all the bad drivers who show up each evening. The Larimer project continues, of course, between 20th and 15th, narrowing that to a single lane. Otherwise, watch or watch out for the Columbus Day Parade, at 10 on Saturday, October 9. The route (formerly holding LoDo hostage) has been moved starting and ending at the Civic Center and using 15th between Court and Welton, Welton to 17th, back to Broadway. That makes it a little harder to get to your audition at the Sheraton for “America’s Got Talent”.

You may wake up Sunday to the sounds of people moving between all three Denver sports venues in the “Fans on the Field” 5K/10K. LoDo gets its share of the traffic after the 8:30 a.m. start when the participants round home plate at Coors Field, then head out down Wynkoop, turning right on 15th and going to Little Raven before ducking into the Pepsi Center. That explains all the traffic cones on Wynkoop already in place on Friday afternoon! Be careful crossing the streets!

Street Watch: Race for the Cure Weekend!

October 1st, 2010

(Street Watch information is provided by the City and County of Denver, carefully culled and digested by Denver by the Slice and posted here for LoDoNA by David Huntress. See Denver by the Slice, the blog about living in Downtown Denver, for more news and views)

Plenty of pink on Sunday as the huge Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes place at and around the Pepsi Center. As in the past, expect tens of thousands to join this benefit to fight breast cancer. Street closings are numerous for Sunday morning, though not all of the streets closed are actual routes of the race/walk. Here are the majors (4 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday): 15th Street between Delgany and Market; Speer Boulevard from Larimer to Federal; Colfax from Irving to Kalamath; and, Auraria Parkway between I-25 and 14th Street. Expect plenty of participants parking throughout the neighborhood.

If you wondered why your doctor was “out” this week, could be he or she was attending the American Academy of Family Physicians Convention here in Denver. 12,000 of them. That ends on Saturday, October 2, but not before an early Saturday Run/Walk partly in Downtown on 14th Street, Larimer and then the Cherry Creek paths. Don’t get hurt. And, be careful crossing the streets!
